The logo for the International Year of Planet Earth is based on a design of the German Ministry of Education and Research, and is used by kind permission of that organization.  It comprises an inner circle (red) representing the solid earth, the biosphere in green, the hydrosphere in dark blue and the atmosphere in pale blue, all constituents of the earth system.
